Gooooood Morning Potty People!
Can you feel it?
The air getting cooler…
The sweaters and winter apparel beginning to make an appearance…
You know what that means… its officially Sweatpants season!
Sweatpants – The only pair of pants named after an activity you will never do in them – “Sweat”
Working out a week before Thanksgiving is like bringing a sign to a Stevie Wonder concert… pointless.
But for those of you motivated to get active and do so… Feel free to prove us wrong!
Speaking of proving us wrong... That brings us to this week’s incredibly inspiring Main Story courtesy of Chris Nikic and his family!
Unfortunately, Chris’s story begins with some sad news – shortly after being born, his parents were notified that he had both Down Syndrome and a ventricular septal defect — a hole in his heart.
As a result, at five months old Chris had to undergo open-heart surgery.
Seven days later, doctors saw irregularities in his heart, saying they needed to implement a permanent pacemaker because there would be "zero chance" it could work on his own.
Nik and Patty, Chris's parents, asked family members and friends to pray and asked doctors to test Chris' heart again, which they eventually did.
…. The following day, doctors discovered Chris didn't need a pacemaker.
This ended up being a blessing in disguise, as Chris, who was often socially excluded by his classmates – would instead spend his free time going to the Gym to workout with his father Nik.
(Stick with us, We promise… it gets Happy in a moment)
Chris, who could barely do a single push-up when he started… Now lives his life under one motto: “1% Better. Every Single Day. In Every Aspect of Life”
Through living out this motto, hard work, dedication, sacrifice and the constant loving support of his father, his trainers and community around him…
Chris has become a living inspiration.
In November 2020, Chris Nikic, then 21, became the first person with Down Syndrome to complete an Ironman Triathlon.
For those of you who don’t know what that entails… That’s a: 2.4-mile swim, followed by a 112-mile bike ride, and then finished off with a 26.2-mile marathon run!
(…I’m tired from just typing that sentence out)
And now, in just the past few months – Chris has just completed the 2021 Boston Marathon, and just last Sunday completed the 2021 TCS New York City Marathon.
In July of 2021, Chris was honored with the Jimmy V Award for Perseverance at The ESPYS.
In his acceptance speech, Chris said, "I'm running to make a difference and I'm running for the kids who are going to open up the sport and the right to be included and not be excluded"
This story is truly one of the most beautiful and inspiring stories we have had the pleasure of sharing with you, and while we will admit, we became a bit teary-eyed watching this video – we think its well worth the watch!
Let’s race into this week’s Potty Picks!
Since our Main Story ran a little long this week, we will keep the Video Of the Week section pretty simple
